About

The Story

I wanted to understand why piano practice changes the brain. So I designed experiments to find out. My research on music and memory earned recognition at ISEF, but the real discovery was personal: the discipline of daily practice restructured how I think. Oclef gave me 700 days of data on my own transformation. Now I'm turning that data into science others can use.

About This Feature

The Science of Artistry

Emily doesn't just practice piano—she studies what practicing does to her brain. This feature follows her from the lab to the bench, revealing how neuroscience research and musical discipline became two sides of the same coin. Her ISEF-winning research started with a simple question: Why does this work?

"I wanted to understand why practice changes the brain. So I designed experiments to find out."

"Emily came to me with a spreadsheet of her practice data and asked me to help her optimize it. Most students don't even track their time. She was tracking cognitive load."
